FM1-43を用いて小胞の運動を観察した結果、約700,000個の放出可能な小胞が細胞膜から2um以内に存在し、脱分極に際しては、持続的なエクソサイトーシス・エンドサイトーシスの拮抗した(3800小胞/s)サイクルが生じ、エンドサイトーシスして1分くらいで放出可能になることが分かり、NP–EGTAを用いてcaged Ca2+放出させ、Fura-2で細胞質Ca2+を見ると、シナプス・リボンは一過性放出のみではなく、uM以内の[Ca2+]iで持続的放出を起こすことが分かった。
